Pilate therefore took Jesus, and scourged him — The Romans usually scourged the criminals whom they condemned to be crucified, which was the reason why Pilate ordered our Lord to be scourged before he delivered him up to suffer that punishment. See note on Matthew 27:26. Webcalls himself “the one whom Jesus loved” (John 13:23; 19:26; 20:2; 21:7, 20). He was one of the twelve disciples, and among them he was one of those who was very close to Jesus (for exam-ple, see John 13:23-25, where John is said to have been leaning on Jesus’ breast during the Last Supper).
